NATHAN SKILES: Cockaigne

september 12-October 8, 2022 , opening reception September 16 , 5-8pm

Crossley Gallery

The Galleries and Exhibitions and the Fine Arts Departments of Ringling College of Art + Design are pleased to present, Cockaigne, a solo exhibition featuring the work of 2003 Ringling College alumni, Nathan Skiles.

Referencing Bruegel’s depiction of the gluttonous utopia, The Land of Cockaigne, Skiles’ exhibition-cum-installation, threads together themes of aspiration, prosperity, and decadence.

Integrating paintings, collage, and vinyl-cut wall drawings, Skiles’ installation charts the intersection between continuity and experimentation within the artist’s practice.

Incorporating references gleaned from Skiles’ autobiographical experience in Indiana, Cockaigne, weaves together a diverse set of processes and iconography, including quilting, construction, and folk art.
